A bit about me

Hello, I’m James. I have over 30 years’ experience working in tax, with a focus principally on personal taxation for private individuals and business owners. My job is not only to ensure that compliance obligations are met but, more importantly, to identify opportunities to mitigate liabilities or for wealth preservation.

I advise on all areas of personal taxation including Inheritance Tax planning, Capital Gains Tax and tax-efficient structures for family companies. I enjoy dealing with the interaction between businesses and personal taxation in areas such as employee compensation packages, share option schemes and relocating to or from the UK. I strive to deliver a service that is proportionate, considered, geared to maximising opportunities and avoiding pitfalls.

In my role, I particularly enjoy establishing and nurturing a relationship of trust with the clients I deal with. The stimulation that comes from working with a team of highly motivated and highly competent people, and the sheer variety of situations I am asked to advise on really keep me on my toes!

Personally speaking

My favourite hobbies?

Walking with my wife and our dogs, playing guitar, cooking, listening to music and reading.

Alternative career choice?

A luthier – it would be such a joy to create a musical instrument from raw materials.

A luxury item I’d take on a desert island?

A Spanish Guitar – it’s a unique style of playing and I’d have the time to learn it properly!

Most daring thing you’ve ever done?

About 20 years ago I qualified as a private pilot and I think the first time I flew solo would be about the top of the list!
