A bit about me

Hello, I’m Gareth. I graduated from Warwick University with a Masters degree in Mathematics and started as a trainee at Haines Watts in 2003. I initially started auditing and preparing accounts, but within a few years, started working on tax. I obtained my ACCA qualification in 2006 and then my CTA in 2007. In 2012, I obtained my ADIT qualification and became a tax partner. In 2016 I moved to Grant Thornton as an associate director and then came to Ecovis as a director.

I am a ‘doer’, I enjoy doing tax work, I enjoy creating the finished product, be that the completion of a tax return or an advisory report. I enjoy the complexities of tax and reviewing the legislation, guidance and case law to work out the answers and solve problems.

I like to think that I remove the ‘burden’ of tax from my clients so that they can focus on their businesses and what they do best. I help clients pay the right amount of tax by providing tailored advice based upon the commercial decisions and transactions that they make. As such, I see myself as a trusted adviser and use my experience of a variety of taxes so that my clients can be sure there are no hidden surprises, they are fully tax compliant, and have claimed the reliefs and exemptions to which they are entitled no matter the situation.

I particularly like cross border transactions which involve advice on withholding taxes, permanent establishments and residence. However, I also enjoy the more complex areas of UK taxation, such as corporate interest restriction, and hybrid and other mismatches.

Personally speaking

  • What are my favourite hobbies?

Before I had children, I would play badminton, squash, football and golf infrequently. I would also play video games and read. Now I keep my children entertained which involves taking them on days out, playing games with them and reading to them

  • If I had an alternative career choice, it would be…

An actuary

  • A luxury item I’d take on a desert island

Virtual-reality headset

  • Favourite music

Most music from the 1990s

  • If you could have a superpower, what would it be and why?

Teleporting myself and others – although sometimes the journey is more important than the destination

  • What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Measure twice, cut once
