Tax write-offs for an electric car with zero emissions

5 June 2025

Buying a zero-emission electric car through your limited company could mean 100% tax relief in year one. Understand the capital allowances and boost your business’s tax efficiency with smart vehicle choices.

Drive Efficiency with an Electric Car Through Your Company

Purchasing an electric car with zero emissions through your limited company can offer significant tax advantages. Not only does it support your sustainability goals, but it also enhances your business’s tax efficiency.

Capital Allowances Explained

When your company buys a car, it is treated as a fixed asset. This means you can claim tax relief through capital allowances. However, company cars do not qualify for the Annual Investment Allowance (AIA). Instead, they fall into specific categories based on CO₂ emissions and the date of purchase.

100% First Year Allowance for Zero-Emission Electric Cars

If you buy a brand-new electric car with zero emissions, you can claim a 100% First Year Allowance (FYA). This allows your company to deduct the full cost of the car from its taxable profits in the year of purchase. The car must be new and registered as zero-emission to qualify.

This immediate tax relief can significantly reduce your corporation tax bill. It also improves cash flow, especially in the year of acquisition.

What If the Car Doesn’t Qualify?

If the car does not meet the criteria for 100% FYA, it will fall into one of two categories:

  • 18% Main Rate Allowance
This applies to cars with low CO₂ emissions. You can deduct 18% of the cost each year on a reducing balance basis.
  • 6% Special Rate Allowance
This applies to high-emission vehicles or certain second-hand cars. Only 6% of the cost is deductible annually.

Make a Smart Business Choice

Choosing an electric car with zero emissions is not just environmentally responsible. It also makes financial sense. With generous tax reliefs and lower running costs, it’s a smart move for many limited companies.
