Tax credits reminder

23 May 2024

We would like to remind our readers that HMRC is currently sending the annual tax credit renewal packs to 730,000 tax credit claimants.

HMRC is actively sending out annual tax credit renewal packs to 730,000 claimants and strongly encourages online renewals. The campaign started on May 2, 2024, and aims to complete all deliveries by June 19, 2024.

Taxpayers with a black-striped pack will receive automatic renewals. However, they must inform HMRC about any unreported changes, such as new working hours, different childcare costs, or changes in pay.

If your pack has a red stripe and prompts ‘reply now’, you must renew. You should complete your tax credit renewals by July 31, 2024, to prevent payment interruptions. HMRC expects to send about 10,000 red-striped packs, and claimants can renew through GOV.UK or the HMRC app.

Universal Credit will fully replace tax credits by April 5, 2025. The DWP or the Department for Communities in Northern Ireland will issue a Migration Notice to tax credit recipients. This notice will inform them about the switch to Universal Credit, and it is important not to ignore it.

To ensure a smooth transition, it is vital for claimants to keep their contact information current and to check their mail for updates from HMRC and DWP. Staying informed and proactive will help claimants navigate the change to Universal Credit successfully.
