Summer VAT relief has ended

3 September 2026

The temporary 5% VAT reduction for children's meals, tickets and family attractions has finished. Discover what the relief covered, which supplies were excluded and what your business must do now that summer VAT relief has ended.

Summer VAT relief has ended

Did your business use the temporary VAT reduction over the holidays? If so, take note. Summer VAT relief has ended, so normal rules now apply again. Consequently, businesses must act quickly and carefully.

What the relief covered

Firstly, the government introduced a temporary 5% reduced rate of VAT. It applied from 25 June 2026 until 1 September 2026. Essentially, it aimed to cut costs for families during the summer holidays. Therefore, it covered several selected activities and services.

Specifically, the relief applied to the following supplies:

  • Qualifying children’s meals eaten on the premises at restaurants, cafés and similar venues
  • Children’s tickets for cinemas, theatres, shows, concerts and exhibitions
  • Admission charges for certain family attractions

Moreover, those attractions included theme parks, amusement parks and zoos. Likewise, they covered museums, soft play centres and observation attractions.

What businesses must do now

However, that temporary period is over. As a result, businesses must return to the normal VAT rules. In particular, treat any relevant supplies made from 2 September 2026 accordingly. Furthermore, remember one important point about advance tickets. Tickets bought during the relief period still matter here. If admission falls on or after 2 September, the standard 20% rate applies.

Additionally, businesses should review their advance payments carefully. After all, the time-of-supply rules determine the correct treatment. So, check that you have accounted for VAT correctly.

Which supplies were excluded

Importantly, the relief did not cover every family purchase. For example, several items remained under their normal VAT treatment, such as:

  • Takeaway meals
  • Sports activities
  • Separately supplied goods or services

Therefore, businesses should not assume everything qualified.

Keeping accurate records

Finally, good record-keeping remains essential. Consequently, retain appropriate records for all relevant supplies. Meanwhile, continue using the existing VAT guidance too. That way, you can determine the correct liability with confidence. Ultimately, careful checks now will prevent costly errors later, especially since summer VAT relief has ended.
