Preparing for the end of the tax year
With the end of the 2025–26 tax year approaching on 5 April 2026, many taxpayers still have time to increase their retirement savings. Pension contributions remain one of the most efficient ways to build long‑term security. They also offer generous tax relief at a taxpayer’s highest marginal rate. Therefore, taxpayers benefit immediately while strengthening their future position.
Understanding how relief works
Tax relief on private pension contributions is usually available on amounts up to 100% of relevant earnings. This is subject to several limits, but the core principle remains straightforward. The relief reduces the effective cost of saving for retirement. Basic rate taxpayers gain 20% relief, higher rate taxpayers can claim 40%, and additional rate taxpayers may receive 45%. This structure means that saving through a pension often provides better value than saving through other vehicles.
Claiming relief on pension contributions
Basic rate relief is typically applied automatically by the pension provider. This ensures taxpayers receive the 20% uplift without needing to take further action. However, higher and additional rate taxpayers must claim their extra relief. They can do this through their self‑assessment return or by contacting HMRC directly. As a result, they ensure that all available relief reaches their pension pot.
Using allowances effectively
Most individuals can contribute up to the £60,000 annual allowance while still benefiting from tax relief. Contributions above this level may trigger an annual allowance charge. Nevertheless, taxpayers may still increase their pension savings by using the carry forward rules. These rules allow unused pension allowances from the previous three tax years to be used, provided they made pension contributions during those years. This approach can significantly boost retirement savings.
Strengthening long‑term planning
Careful planning helps taxpayers maximise the value of pension contributions. By acting before the tax year ends, individuals can secure valuable relief and build greater financial resilience. In addition, these steps support stronger retirement outcomes.
