New employment protections

9 April 2024

New legislation, including three Government backed cross party Acts, came into force from 6 April 2024.

From 6 April 2024, new legislation took effect. This includes three Government-backed Acts. These laws give special treatment to pregnant women and new parents in redundancy situations. They form part of a broader suite of employment protections designed to support families and hardworking Brits.

The new laws fortify redundancy protections. They extend to pregnancy and the period after parents return to work. The Acts also bolster vulnerable workers. They provide greater flexibility and confidence, which can stimulate productivity, economic growth, and tackle inactivity.

Families will benefit from new employment protections. These include redundancy protections for pregnant women and new parents. A new leave entitlement will benefit unpaid carers. Flexible paternity leave and pay will also be available. This applies to parents of babies due on or after 6 April 2024.

These employment protection measures will assist businesses in attracting and retaining talented staff. They will support groups more likely to exit the workforce, including parents and disabled people. This support enables them to flourish in the workplace. The laws represent a significant step in protecting workers’ rights. They enhance business competitiveness and performance and contribute to a diverse and inclusive workforce.
