HMRC introduces faster National Insurance refunds

22 October 2026

HMRC has introduced an automated process to speed up refunds of overpaid National Insurance contributions. Find out how the process works, how to respond to HMRC's letter and how to avoid refund scams.

HMRC introduces faster National Insurance refunds through a new automated payment process. The process aims to speed up refunds for people who may have overpaid National Insurance contributions. According to HMRC’s latest Agent Update, it has used the process since early summer. As a result, eligible taxpayers could get the money they’re owed sooner.

How the new process works

First, HMRC identifies people who may have overpaid. It then writes to them with details of their past employment. The letter also sets out the National Insurance contributions they have paid. Recipients should check this information carefully. If everything is correct, they should confirm this to HMRC. However, if anything is wrong, they should give details of the changes needed.

How to respond to HMRC

Taxpayers can respond in one of two ways:

  • using the online service on GOV.UK
  • filling in and returning the paper form that comes with the letter

Importantly, HMRC urges recipients not to ignore these requests. A response helps HMRC work out whether a refund is due. A prompt reply therefore gives taxpayers the best chance of a quick outcome.

What happens next?

Once HMRC receives the information, it will review the details. It will then confirm the outcome to the taxpayer. Customers can find full details of the process in HMRC’s guidance on applying for a National Insurance refund.

Stay alert to scams

As HMRC introduces faster National Insurance refunds, recipients should also watch out for scams. Genuine HMRC refund notifications will never ask recipients to click on links. If you’re unsure whether a letter is genuine, check it using HMRC’s online guidance. In short, always take a moment to check before you act.

A refund is not guaranteed

The new process aims to help eligible taxpayers get money owed to them more quickly. Nevertheless, a refund is not guaranteed. First, HMRC must check all the relevant details. Only then will it confirm whether a refund is due. For this reason, taxpayers should make sure the information they provide is accurate and complete.
