Ecovis Career Spotlight: Meet Lucy

by Lucy Dey

We spoke with Lucy, Ecovis Associate in our Audit and Business Advisory team, on how she went from a mathematics degree to a career in Professional Services.

“I’d say it doesn’t really matter what degree you studied at university, because Ecovis will train you from the ground up and look for your potential rather than the subject you studied at university.”

Hi, I’m Lucy. I’m an Audit Trainee Associate and I joined Ecovis in July 2020

What degree did you study and which university did you go to?

I studied Mathematics at the University of York.

When did you start thinking about which industry you wanted to go into?

It was only after I graduated university and came back from travelling that I even considered a career in accounting.

What made you realise your degree was relevant to a career in professional services?

I think that my Maths degree and accounting go hand in hand, so it was the most obvious choice. I wanted to further my professional knowledge by gaining more qualifications, such as the ACA accounting qualification.

What skills from your degree have you been able to transfer into your role?

Studying Maths at uni, I learnt to interpret facts and figures, which is exactly the type of skill you need here at Ecovis.

What advice would you give to students studying the same degree as you?

I’d say it doesn’t really matter what degree you studied at university, because Ecovis will train you from the ground up and look for your potential rather than the subject you studied at university.

How have you found the transition from university to an ACA training role?

I think the transition from studying a Maths degree is pretty smooth, in the sense that you do quite a lot of exams all at once at university. However, studying the ACA qualification, they’re quite spread out, so you get more of a work-balance.

What drew you to Ecovis in particular?

I was drawn to Ecovis in particular, because it’s a mid-size accountancy firm and I thought I’d be able to get more exposure to clients early on – which is true! Also, the offices are in a great location, about a hundred metres off Oxford Street 😉
