Budget date announced
The new Chancellor of the Exchequer, John Healey, has confirmed the timing. Indeed, he shared the news in a video message. As a result, we now have a Budget date announced for autumn. Specifically, the next UK Budget will take place on Wednesday, 28 October 2026.
Where to find the announcements
So, where can you follow the news? Helpfully, the government will publish full details online. In fact, a special section of the GOV.UK website will carry everything. Moreover, officials will update it after the Chancellor’s speech in October. Therefore, you can access all the announcements in one place.

Interestingly, HM Treasury also wants to hear from you. Currently, it invites written representations for the Autumn Budget 2026. These submissions can come from many different sources, including:
- individuals
- interest groups
- MPs
- organisations
However, your submission should do more than share opinions. Ideally, it should propose evidence-based policy ideas. Alternatively, it can comment on existing policies. In each case, include clear rationale, costs, benefits and deliverability. Importantly, the deadline is 23:59 on Wednesday, 9 September 2026.
The role of the OBR
Alongside this, the government will publish fresh forecasts. Specifically, the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) will provide them. Furthermore, this forecast follows the one published for the Spring Statement. Consequently, it meets a key legal requirement. After all, the OBR must produce at least two forecasts each financial year.
But what does the OBR actually do? Essentially, it holds executive responsibility for the official UK forecasts. In addition, it evaluates the government’s performance against its fiscal targets. Likewise, it assesses the sustainability of, and risks to, the public finances. Finally, it scrutinises government tax and welfare spending.
