It's full-STEAM ahead!

STEAM workshop with Westminster Kingsway College

At Ecovis we love sharing our enthusiasm for everything data so we were thrilled to once again take part in Westminster STEAM Week.

Organised by Westminster City Council, STEAM Week is an opportunity for young people to explore the fascinating worlds of science, technology, engineering, arts and maths through industry sessions. The corporate partners organise a range of activities for students of all ages, inspiring them to broaden their horizons and develop an appetite for success in the STEAM industries.

As an accounting firm with a data analytics service, we at Ecovis are in a unique position to combine all elements of STEAM in our work – science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and even art, through data visualisation!

This year, we hosted Computer Science students from Westminster Kingsway College, one of the largest further education colleges in London, and were delighted with the engagement they showed throughout the afternoon.

The first session aimed to get behind the buzzwords, helping them to demystify data science and get under the hood of machine learning. We explored the ways that AI is used in the world around us and shared our experiences of implementing machine learning solutions with our clients.

The focus of the afternoon was an interactive workshop using data from Spotify, taking students through the creative process of a commercial data science project from proposal to presentation in a fun context. We helped the students to critically assess a dataset in groups and encouraged them to consider additional sources that could be layered with their data to gain stronger insights. There were plenty of budding data scientists in the room and we were really impressed with the students’ contributions.

Celebrating STEAM event

We were delighted to be invited to attend the STEAM celebrations at the end of the week. Whilst partaking in the odd glass of fizz and nibbling on canapes, it was great to meet fellow participating organisations and catch-up with the amazing team at Westminster City Council. A perfect end to an exciting week!
